For an in depth discussion of why you might want to use the K-System and why the level is fixed and the meter primary focus is RMS and NOT peak,
check out the following online resources.

(straight from the horses mouth, so to speak).

The following procedures require a decent sound pressure level meter.

1
Open the REAPER project contained in the "REAPER calibration project" directory included with this download
and turn down your monitor level (DO NOT adjust any levels in the REAPER project).

2
Set your SPL meter to C weighted slow response and place it at your listening position.

3
Make sure your room is quiet. You want to be measuring ONLY the SPL from your monitors.

4
Press play in REAPER and slowly turn up your monitor level control until the SPL meter reads 83dB.
You should only be hearing pink noise from your left speaker.

5
Repeat for the right channel (Pink R Chan) by soloing it (make sure to unsolo the left channel).
Your SPL meter should read very close to 83dB without any adjustments.

You now have your room, monitors and amplifier calibrated to the K-20 system.

6
Make a note of the level setting on your amplifier (or monitors if they are powered).
This is the K-20 reference level.

7
Repeat the steps above and adjust your monitor level control to read 77dB.

8
Make another note of the level setting on your amplifier (or monitors if they are powered).
This is the K-14 reference level.

You now have your room, monitors and amplifier calibrated to the K-14 system.

9
Repeat the steps above and adjust your monitor level control to read 75dB.

10
Make another note of the level setting on your amplifier (or monitors if they are powered).
This is the K-12 reference level.

You now have your room, monitors and amplifier calibrated to the K-12 system.
